How to fix a squeaky chair

We have a rocker in our nursery that has developed a squeak when you rock in it. It got so bad that it was hard to rock our infant to sleep. Here's how to fix it.

Tools Used

WD-40

Preparing the chair

First, try to figure out where the squeak is coming from. Sit in the chair and rock around. On our chair, there is a spring on the left and a spring on the right that developed a squeak.

Once you have a good idea, flip the chair forward onto its face.

Using WD-40

The bottom of the chair

Now, spray WD-40 on each of the connection points below the chair. You want to look for any joints, screws, and spring connections.

The WD-40 will foam up a little and cover the spray area pretty well.

Use the paper towel so that you don’t get any drips on your floor. Let it dry for a few minutes and flip the chair back over. Test it out to see if the squeaking is better. If not, repeat the process.

Next steps

Our chair still develops a squeak after a few days. Looking at the bottom, there is a rubber piece where the spring connects to the metal of the chair base. That rubber piece has been worn down and you have metal on metal.

I may see if I can remove the springs and reapply some kind of coating to the end of the spring.
